In his compelling new book, Why It's Kicking Off Everywhere: The New Global Revolutions, Newsnight presenter Paul Mason sets out to explore the causes and consequences of the current wave of revolt, illuminating the links between the economic and social crisis. Mingling with protestors in locations from Westminster to Wisconsin, he reports from the frontlines of protest, arguing that the events of 2011 reflect the expanding power of the individual and a call for new political alternatives.

These can be seen in many places around the World. This is a timely book in that it attempts to articulate the disparate uprisings and protests now taking place globally.
In Wigan a group calling themselves the "Wigan Diggers" have formed to commemorate the life of land reform activist Gerrard Winstanley who was born in Wigan. Winstanley led "The True Levellers" in a utopian land reform action. His "Diggers" took over Georges Hill in Surrey to plant the land there with vegetables and to build their own shelters. A medieval "occupy" movement until it was disbanded violently by the Parliament of the day.
The Wigan Diggers are holding a festival on 8th September in Wigan to further advance the ideas of this visionary farm hand into the 21st Century.
