Internship Program

Verso has regular internships in both the US and UK—please check these guidelines for the application process and dates.

USA

Our office in Brooklyn has three 16-week internship programs each year: Spring (January to April), Summer (May to August), and Fall (September to December). Each internship is full-time, and paid at a rate of $8 per hour for 40 hours per week—Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm. Exact start and finish dates will be arranged during the hiring process, and can be shifted a little to accommodate academic or other commitments. Interns will be expected to learn through practical hands-on experience and will be appraised throughout their time with Verso.

Verso's internships are intended to act as an introduction to book publishing, as well as to a wider political and intellectual project. Interns will report either to the publicity and marketing department or to editorial and production, though all placements will involve work across the full range of Verso's activities—including office administration tasks and helping to staff events. We will aim to ensure that each intern works closely with a few books through a complete production or publicity cycle. A good knowledge of Verso's list, and a curious and critical engagement with current affairs, will be an advantage.

Please apply for Spring internships by Oct 15, and we will confirm any placements by Nov 15. Apply for Summer internships by Feb 1, and we will confirm placements by Feb 15. Apply for Fall internships by April 15, and we will confirm by May 15. Applicants will need to be available for one interview in Brooklyn, in between the application and confirmation dates, and to be legally entitled to work in the US. All applications need to include both a resumé and cover letter, with the letter offering specific reasons why the applicant would be well suited to working on Verso's list, and expressing any preference for editorial or publicity. We will acknowledge receipt of all complete applications received by the deadline, and then notify shortlisted candidates with the date and time of their interview. Please email your application to verso@versobooks.com, with 'Spring/Summer/Fall internship application' in the subject line.

UK

Our office in London now has six internship programs each year: two in Spring (February to June), two in Summer (July to August) and two in Autumn (September to December). One internship in each period will focus on the editorial process and the other will focus on sales, marketing and publicity but there will be the opportunity to learn about the other department in order to gain a rounded view of the publishing process. Each internship is full-time, and paid at a rate of £7.50 per hour for 42.5 hours per week—Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 6pm (with some evening and weekend work). Exact start and finish dates will be arranged during the hiring process, and can be shifted a little to accommodate academic or other commitments. Interns will be expected to learn through practical hands-on experience and will be appraised throughout their time with Verso.

Please apply for the Summer and Autumn internships by April 12th, and we will confirm interviews for shortlisted candidates by 29th April for interview during the week beginning 6th May. We aim to confirm placements by 13th May. Due to the large number of applications we receive we will only be contacting those applicants who have been selected for interview. Applicants will need to be available for one interview in London in May (where they will be expected to take a copy writing and proofing test), and to be legally entitled to work in the UK. All applications need to include both a CV and cover letter, as separate attachments, with the letter offering specific reasons why the applicant would be well suited to working on Verso's list. Please email your application to enquiries@verso.co.uk. In the subject line, please quote: your name; 'Summer' or 'Autumn internship application', and your preferred department, 'Editorial' or 'Sales and Marketing'. Please make sure that you follow this requirement.

Verso's internships are intended to act as an introduction to book publishing, as well as to a wider political and intellectual project. Internship responsibilities will include office administration tasks, supporting publicity and marketing projects, assisting book production and conducting editorial research. We will aim to ensure that each intern works closely with a few books through a complete production or publicity cycle. A good knowledge of Verso's list, an interest in politics, philosophy and history, and a curious and critical engagement with current affairs, will be an advantage.

The internships are very much viewed as a first step to gaining a position within the publishing industry and we have a good record of helping our interns to find permanent work. We will seek to advise interns on job applications and interviews, act as referees—and, where possible, make recommendations to our numerous contacts within the industry.
