this is a great little book store! and i'm going to be in montreal on the 13th; too bad i'm going to miss this special event! try reservoir or dieu du ciel for good microbrews in the area. i'm still hoping for a shiffrin event in the the NE US...

Words & Money is certainly a poignant and well-timed book under current circumstances, and I believe that I agree with Schiffrrin's argument 100+%. However, in Words & Money, as in the Business of Books and elsewhere, he continues to argue that publishers in the past did not always use the profit motive as their chief source of making decisions. On its surface, this argument seems true enough, and it definitely helps to make sense of the intensity of our neoliberal era.
But what about p.249 of The Coming of the Book, where, in the process of situating the emergence and impact of print, Febvre and Martin argue, "One fact must not be lost sight of: the printer and the bookseller worked above all and from the beginning for profit..."?
How is one to make sense of this discrepancy between the two texts?
