About the panelists:
Joel Wainwright, professor at Ohio State, is author of Geopiracy and Decolonizing Development, which won the Blaut award.
Mazen Labban is a human-environment geographer interested in critical social theory, political economy, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, extraction, energy, and waste. He is working on two books: rethinking the inter-relationships between urbanization, mining, and wasting under modern capitalism; exploring the multiple intersections of various microbes with the circuits of capital.
Matt Shafer's work brings together transnational intellectual history and contemporary social theory to examine how fundamental political ideas are formed and contested over time. He is writing a book on recent debates about how the word violence should be defined in political theory and deployed in political rhetoric.
