The ‘Pessimistic’ Wolfgang Streeck nominated for the inaugural New Statesman SPERI Prize for Political Economy

Wolfgang Streeck, author of Buying Time: The Delayed Crisis of Democratic Capitalism, has been announced as one of the six writers on the shortlist for the inaugural New Statesman SPERI Prize for Political Economy. The prize, a partnership between the New Statesman and the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute (SPERI) at the University of Sheffield, is awarded to the scholar who has done the most for promoting original and critical ideas in political economy to a wide audience.

The judges felt that Streeck ‘has long offered a first-rate analysis of the “German model” of the social market economy and of European social democracy more generally, highlighting both their strengths and limits,’ noting that his work has become increasingly ‘pessimistic' over the past few years.
