Israeli newspaper Ma'ariv lashes out at Gideon Levy

Tamar Shlaim18 October 2010

Ma'ariv, Israel's second-biggest selling daily newspaper has lashed out at Gideon Levy following Johann Hari's wonderful profile in the Independent. The original article, by Ben Dror Yemini is in Hebrew only, but Arutz Sheva (the religious-Zionist voice of the settlement movement) have helpfully provided a summary with selected quotes in English.

Levy has faced criticism from within Israel and from right-wing Jewish groups in the UK after his hugely successful speaking tour to promote The Punishment of Gaza.

The piece goes a long way to confirming some of Gideon Levy's statements about the Israeli media:

[We are taught] a few narratives that it’s very hard to break. That we Israelis are the ultimate and only victims. That the Palestinians are born to kill, and their hatred is irrational. That the Palestinians are not human beings like us? So you get a society without any moral doubts, without any questions marks, with hardly public debate. To raise your voice against all this is very hard.”
