Bo Gritz is one of the most decorated Vietnam vets: he inspired the character of Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo. But when disenchantment set in with CIA covert operations in South East Asia, he turned whistleblower to high-level collusion and corruption in the US government, making him an official outcast. He embodies the disturbances at the heart of American society, supporting gun-carrying and anti-government conspiracy theories while performing his own role as an action hero for the people. Using newly-discovered archive footage and extensive interviews, the film uncovers how America’s own cultural myth-making invades its collective psyche to the detriment of their collective reality.
The film's director, award-winning film-maker Andrea Luka Zimmerman will be in conversation with acclaimed US investigative journalist David Neiwert, author of Alt-America: the Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump (Verso). The evening is hosted by Gareth Evans.
