As part of her UK tour to promote her new book Narcoland: The Mexican Drug Lords and Their Godfathers, Anabel Hernández will be speaking at Conway Hall on Sunday 15th September.
Anabel Hernández has spent her adult life exposing the truth behind Mexico's drug war. It is a war that has ravaged the country, leaving 70,000 dead with another 27,000 missing in the last 6 years. Outside of Mexico news of shocking brutality, revenge killings and bloody warnings sent via mutilated bodies abound in the media. Yet despite this, much of the journalism on the topic fails to helps us understand the roots of the violence.
Anabel is no stranger to this violence first-hand either. In 2000 her father was kidnapped at the hands of Mexican criminals, with police in Mexico City refusing to investigate without payment. The family refused, figuring they would take the money anyway, and Mr Hernández was murdered. Upon publication of Narcoland in Mexico Hernández received multiple death threats that forced the Mexican Human Rights Commission to assign her two 24-hour bodyguards. They remain with her to this day.
Narcoland is based on five years of reporting by Anabel Hernández and the subject of intense national controversy. It includes extensive interviews with drug lords and government officials, and is the first book to definitively link the rise of the drug cartels in Mexico to government and business complicity at the very highest levels. A wakeup call to all of us, Anabel Hernández explains how Mexico has become a base for the mega-cartels of Latin America and paints a damning picture of state power penetrated by narco interests.
Join Anabel as she discusses her life and work in Mexico, and shares many chilling stories she has witnessed along the way.
