Shlomo Sand in conversation with Professor Gilbert Achcar

Professor Shlomo Sand, author of the controversial bestseller The Invention of the Jewish People, will be in conversation with Professor Gilbert Achcar, author of The Arabs and the Holocaust to discuss his new book On the Nation and the 'Jewish People'.

In this book, Sand presents the work of Ernest Renan one of the intellectual giants of the nineteenth century in France, the man who first opened up the study of nationalism. Accused of anti-Semitism by Edward Said, Renan, Sand argues, is a profoundly misunderstood thinker. Demonstrating the complexity of Renan's thought, Sand shows the relationship of Renan's work to that of key twentieth-century thinkers on nationalism, such as Raymond Aron and Ernest Gellner, and argues for the continued importance of studying Renan.
