7.00pm - 8.30pm
Foyles, London
Level 6, 107 Charing Cross Road
London, WC2H 0EB United Kingdom
With Gabriella Coleman, Cory Doctorow & James Bridle

Anonymous, a group of hackers, activists and technologists, have slammed onto the global stage with a series of high-profile operations disrupting communications, shaking state intelligence agencies and fighting global corporations. Since gaining mainstream attention after their attacks on the Church of Scientology in 2008 they've become key players from Occupy Wall Street to the Arab Spring. But how much do we know about who they are and what motivates them?

Six years ago Gabriella Coleman set out to study the rise of this global phenomenon just as some of its members were turning to political protest and dangerous disruption. In this event she presents her new book Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous, and discusses the rise of Anonymous with award-winning science fiction author and journalist Cory Doctorow. This event will be chaired by writer and artist James Bridle.

Gabriella Coleman (pcitured) holds the Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy at McGill University. Trained as a cultural anthropologist, she researches, writes about, and teaches on computer hackers and digital activism.

Cory Doctorow is the author of the New York Times bestselling novel Little Brother. He has won the Locus Award for his fiction three times, been nominated for both the Hugo and the Nebula, and is the only author to have won both the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer and the Campbell Award for best SF Novel of the Year. He is the co-editor of boingboing.net
