Roberto Unger speaks out against former student Barack Obama

Roberto Unger, author of The Left Alternative, is speaking out against the Democratic Party and President Barack Obama, his former student at Harvard Law School. In a YouTube video recently featured in the Huffington Post, Unger speaks about the necessity of defeating Obama in the upcoming Presidential Election in order to advance the progressive cause in the long run.

"The government bribed, placated, and finally abandonned the people," he says of the Democratic Party's response to the financial crisis, adding that the Party "proposes no new directions." "He has delivered the politics of democracy to the rule of money" and "has evoked a politics of handholding, but no one changes the world without a struggle," says Unger of Obama. While he admints that a Republican presidency will come with a cost, he thinks that this cost will be minimal and that the risk of "military adventurism" will be high no matter which candidate wins in November.

For a really interesting, in fact, telling commentary on this video see Gary Wills commentary at the New York Review of Books web site. Wills casts himself as the weary realist, to Professor Unger's out of touch with reality idealist, whose afraid of getting his hands dirty, politically speaking. Obama takes the part of our dear leader in this fable confected by Professor Wills. Although, refracted through 'the lesser of two evils' lens.

For a truly engaging, revelatory debate on Professor Unger's video, go to the New York Review of Books site and read Gary Wills critique of  the professor's video. He portrays the professor as a politically naive purist, while casting himself as the prescient political realist, as counterpoint. And be sure to read the comments section: very illuminating, not to speak of entertaining.

I was a student of Roberto Unger's in 1980, when he urged Ted Kennedy to struggle for the progressive soul of the Democratic Party against the venal Jimmy Carter, in terms remarkably similar to the ones he invokes here.  At the time I thrilled to the voice of democratic prophecy; what followed was two terms of Ronald Reagan and one of Bush Senior.

The last time we heard that there was no difference between the two major parties was from Ralph Nader in 2000.   America may be seething with energy, as Professor Unger says, but what makes him believe that the energy can be led in a progressive direction?  Let's grant, for the sake of argument, that Obama's program is no better than "handholding and food stamps."  Unger's alternative is fine words and fisticuffs--high-minded rhetoric and sectarian recriminations.
