UK - Editor
The London office of Verso Books—the largest independent, radical publishing house in the English-speaking world—is looking for a new editor or senior editor (depending on experience). He or she will work with our senior editors in New York and Paris to bring in book proposals across Verso's full range—international politics, history, sociology, literature, art, economics and theory—and see them through to publication. Verso's book sales are at a historic high, and growing fast—the successful candidate would need to be able to acquire books that will have a real political and intellectual impact, and to help Verso find substantial trade audiences in both the UK and the US. Verso's London editor will also play a central role in our efforts to stay ahead of the dramatic changes in the book industry and across all other media.
Candidates will have a minimum of two years' editorial experience, with a list of titles which they have acquired and published. They will need to show that they take a hands-on editorial approach to manuscripts once they've been submitted, and are able to work to deadline on a range of complex projects as part of a dynamic and tightly knit team. He or she will need to have—and to further develop—their list of author and publishing contacts, at the bookfairs and well beyond. A demonstrable understanding of Verso's list, and the political and intellectual project that drives it, is essential. Salary will be according to experience.
Please email your covering letter and CV to Rowan Wilson at rowan@verso.co.uk by January 4th, with the subject line 'Editor application'. (Please indicate where you saw this advertisement). Applicants must be entitled to work in the UK, and available for interview during the week beginning January 9th.
