The Essential John Berger

The essential collection of the work from critic, political activist, award winning novelist and artist John Berger - published to coincide with the author's 100th anniversary

As we approach the centenary of Berger’s birth in December 2026, Verso plans to publish the Berger Classic series that will show the huge variety and depth of John’s vision of the world. Whether in his art history, poetic translation, drama, fiction or his own sketchbooks, Berger was a storyteller, and so much more. He was a deeply political thinker in all things and this series collects works from across his career.

“John Berger teaches us how to think, how to feel, how to stare at things till we see what we thought wasn’t there. But above all he teaches us how to love in the face of adversity. He is a master.” Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things
